Welcome to Showbiz

“Hello?” Betty said, opening the door slowly.

“Hello!” someone answered in a jolly voice.

“Who are you?”

“Herbert Plug,” the man said, lifting his hat off his head.

“No, really, what’s your name?”

“Herbert Plug, from Plug and Sons, agents to the stars. We take dreams and put them on the silver screen!” he said with a big smile.

“Agents?”

“Oh yes, we represent some of the biggest, best stars in film and on telly. You know that bloke from the insurance ad who sings that song? There’s him … and a couple of others.”

“Oh. Sorry, why are you here?” Betty asked.

“I’ll tell you why, your Ex-Maj. Let’s talk the future. There is quite a bit of money to be made from being on the TV, for someone like you.”

“Someone like me?”

“Yes, now don’t take this the wrong way, but you were huge. I mean, the queen is about as big as it gets. Palaces, crowns and, now, well, you’ve ended up here,” Herbert said as he walked into the house. “It’s a fall from grace, it’s a story of having it all and now having nothing!”

“Goodness me,” Betty said, not used to people speaking to her so bluntly.

“Three words, Celebrity Love Island,” Herbert said. “Strictly Come Dancing. I’m a Celebrity. I can get you work; I can get you good money.”

“Good money?”

“Big money!” Herbert said.

“Big money?” Betty muttered. “How much, you know, to be on a television show? You know, the dancing one, the one I’ve actually seen?”

“Thousands,” Herbert said. “That would be for one of the big shows, like Strictly, and that’s where we can end up – but we need to start small. I’ve got a supermarket that needs someone to cut a big ribbon with a pair of giant scissors right now. They’re waiting on the phone. What do you say, Your Ex-Maj? 500 quid, cash in hand, minus 45% for me.”

“OK,” Betty said.

“Brilliant. Welcome to showbiz, you’re going to love it!”
